Review: Aurora lights up Wolverhampton Grand Theatre

The Wolverhampton Grand Theatre has brought their production of Sleeping Beauty to the public this year

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Running until 4th  of January, this take on the classic fairytale excited audiences during their first performance on the afternoon of 29th November.

It has once again been co-written by Tam Ryan and Ian Adams, and they also star as Mickey and Dame Fortune respectively and they bring the comedy.

They definitely achieved this by making jokes about different parts of the Midlands, including referring to Smethwick as the Underworld and that in Wolverhampton there is a Greggs every fifty yards with a guy outside arguing with a Pigeon.

These had the audience laughing their heads off with musical puns being added later in the production.

There was also classic slapstick comedy with a scene and song called 12 Wedding Presents which was very messy and incredibly funny. This scene also included Wolverhampton’s own Zak Douglas and Solomon Davy.

These two men played Gerald the Herald and Prince Stephen of Bridgnorth respectively. Zak definitely made people laugh throughout his time on stage with the evil witch. Solomon played the prince really well and had a great relationship with Princess Aurora.

Princess Aurora (also known as Princess Beauty) is played by Georgia Iudica Davies who has been in pantomimes and other musical productions in London and as an incredible vocalist, giving her the part looked an easy decision.

Topping off the cast and perhaps the biggest stars were Danny Beard from RuPaul’s Drag Race and former Bad Girls and Coronation Street actress Debra Stephenson. There were cameos from various celebrities including Lorraine Kelly and even the president of the United States Donald Trump, but these were thanks to the incredible impressions of Debra.

Everyone in the show had incredible vocals, and the song choice was brilliant with the return of fan favourite song ‘I Don’t Care’ sung by Dame Fortune.

Danny Beard played the evil witch Carabosse and was booed every time he came on stage and Debra Stephenson played Queen Bertha who was at odds with Carabosse until the very end.

Everyone in the show had incredible vocals, and the song choice was brilliant with the return of fan favourite song ‘I Don’t Care’ sung by Dame Fortune. The cast was topped off with a fantastic ensemble of dancers/ singers, and this made the show complete.

This was a Five-Star performance in my opinion.

The show gave some young actors and actresses a chance and in total have a good crop of the future of acting. This is a great thing for the Grand Theatre to do as it gives youngsters a break.

The show was amazing, everything about it, and I feel that the run will entertain so many members of the public.

This was a Five-Star performance in my opinion.
